In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee talks about discrimination based on gender role, age, and skin color. The characters in this book all have different personalities that influences others. Maycomb, Alabama in 1930’s is where everything happened with slavery and struggling with being poor. The characters Scout, Jem, and Dill had a strong bond and had lots of courage. Shows that justice means other things to other people.
Throughout our reading from, “To Kill A Movkingbird” we as readers learn more about Atticus and who he is as a character. Atticus is one of the characters that we have learned the most about. Atticus in the novel, is the father of Jem and Scout Finch. On page 118 of, “ To Kill A Mockingbird” it states, “He did not do the things our schoolmates’ did: he never went hunting, he did not play poker, or fish or drink or smoke. . People said they were Mayella Ewell's." (Lee 194) The smell and display of the beautiful flowers in the garden still help us to understand the lack of wealth and family. Mayella is trying to be better than the reputation of her family.
Responses to Racism Many stories or novels have a conflict inside pages of the book; it’s necessary part of a book’s story to give the characters something to voice their opinion and their personality on. The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee also has conflicts. The main conflict is between the children and society's norms on racism, especially toward Tom Robinson, a african- american who is suspected of the rape of Mayella Ewell. Dill opposes against the town’s racism openly while in Tom’s trial.
No matter how things result, Atticus is always level headed, and takes a lesson from every situation. Atticus’s parenting style is quite different compared to how many parents raise their children. He treats his kids almost as if they are adults, and expects them to be just as mature as him or any other adult. At the same time, he is also aware that children make childish mistakes. But he expects them to be aware of their mistakes and learn from them.
He knows they're going to get a lot of criticism and hate for their father doing this and he wants to try to protect them from that by telling them about the case. Atticus is aware that his kids are going to have to grow up fast than average and change to not be broken down by Society. After the guilty conviction is made and they all returned home Atticus leaves them for the night by saying, “They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it—seems that only children weep” (Lee 216). This quote shows how Atticus understands that his children have been forced to grow up throughout this case and other events leading up to it. He has known that the world is not so shiny and bright for a while now but his kids have just come to this new understanding.
Therefore, some may argue that Atticus is not a good father to Jem and Scout, the truth is Atticus does what he does with his kids in mind so that it is better for
Ultimately, Atticus is trying to teach his children the importance of understanding the impact their actions have, and instead of making fun of someone, they should put themselves in their position and wonder what it might be like to be
Atticus is also a single father, so things can get rough for him considering he has two crazy children. No matter what happens in the story, Atticus is there to protect them, to teach them the right way of doing things. This directly correlates to how Atticus grew up as a child, he lived in a stable home, and was raised to be intelligent and kind, no matter what the circumstances. Atticus wants the same for his
it's not fair for you and Jem, I know that, but sometimes we have to make the best of things, and the way we conduct ourselves when the chips are down—well, all I can say is, when you and Jem are grown, maybe you'll look back on this with some compassion and some feeling that I didn't let you down." And he’s not a parent that keeps stuff away from kids but knows that they will always remember this trial and someday look back at it. (Chapter 11, page 20) As you can see in all of these, Atticus is a very smart kind and loving person.
Innocence is the state, quality, or fact of being innocent of crime or offense. In the town of Maycomb innocent people are wrongfully accused of things, one didn’t do, such as rapping someone. Or one having horrific rumors surrounding them. In the story “To Kill A Mockingbird” people are accused of things just because of how one looks, and the rumors surrounding them. In the story, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are shown as mockingbirds in different ways showing that people should not be as quick to judge.
The children's perception of their father changes a lot. I think that the children’s perception of their dad changes because at first they think that their father was a boring old man. They think that he was boring because he never did anything interesting. He didn’t have an interesting job as well, so his kids think that he is just innocent. “Atticus was never too tired to play keep-away, but when Jem wanted to tackle him Atticus would say, “I’m too old for that, son.”
Atticus has the responsibilities of a single father and a lawyer. Despite living in an era of racism and segregation, he constantly instills good morals in his children, such as treating everyone with kindness and respect. Along with having the important, yet difficult, duty of a father, Atticus also has the job of a lawyer, which requires him to defend and represent others in court. It was made clear that his children, Jem and Scout, regarded their father as an authoritative and respectful figure in their lives. Knowing this, he is torn between the decisions he is faced with; either to vindicate his client, a black man, of sexual harassment, which he was wrongfully accused of, or taking the safe route, and putting his children first to avoid
To Kill a Mockingbird shows Racist themes throughout the book. To demonstrate, Jem and Scout were being reprimanded by Mrs. Dubose as they walked to the store, she told Scout that of she kept wearing overalls she’d have a bad life, she also said, “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for niggers!” (Lee Unknown). This shows that some people in Maycomb are very racist. As another example, they use the phrase “Nigger Lover” (Lee 94-96) as an insult multiple times.
