Geranium represents for Mayella because she is trying to make the best things for her family, the smell of Geranium flower’s behavior overcomes the power of her life, like the smell of geranium compared to the beauty of flowers. Violet is between blue and purple like Mayella is between two sides of societies. Scout and Jem describe Mayella Ewell as “a mixed child: white people wouldn’t have anything to do with her because she lived among pigs; Negroes wouldn’t have anything to do with her because she was white.” …show more content…
Tim Johnson is a sickly, and rabid dog briefly mentioned in the story. Even short of time the dogs appears, Tim has an impact on the story. The first time, when people in Maycomb County knew him, Scout describes him as, “Tim was a liver-coloured bird dog, the pet of Maycomb” (Lee 105) these are the characteristics of the rabid dog. In the quote, the section refers to “bird-dog” is attractive. A bird-dog is “a gundog trained to hunt or retrieve birds” by Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Th idea of a bird-dog is ironic because the main symbol and title of a story, To Kill a Mockingbird, is a mockingbird, the type of animal in this story is a bird. The bird-dog, Tim Johnson, is a representation of racism and discrimination, while the hunted Mockingbird is a representative of Tom Robinson, who falls victim to the behavior of “bird-dog” or the racial discrimination in his court “…… the pet of Maycomb.” (Lee 105) Tim Johnson describes like the infected dog, and the author Carolyn Jones said that the racism is “usual disease” of the Maycomb’s citizen, and it also makes them unreasonable and dangerous “Like the dog infected with rabies. The people of Maycomb's, ‘usual disease,' racism, which makes them just as irrational and just as dangerous as Tim Johnson.” (Jones 3-4) In Tom Robinson’s court, all the people in Maycomb County were anger that Atticus would help a black person by honestly representing Robinson in a Court as his attorney, “When Atticus makes his summation to the jury, he literally bares himself to the jury's and the town's anger: he "unbuttoned his vest, unbuttoned his collar, loosened his tie, and took off his coat.” (Jones 12) Before the start of the court, Atticus was approached by a group of people who want the intention of injuring Tom Robinson, including Walter Cunningham.
