“It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Lee 103). Like the mockingbird there are always innocent people in situations. Harper Lee in To Kill a Mockingbird uses serious historical situations within the book! Throughout the novel connections are constantly happening between the Jim Crow laws, mob mentality, and racism.
The first influence on Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is Jim Crow laws. The Jim Crow laws are laws that separate Blacks and Whites. The laws are different life styles of the Blacks and the Whites (Pilgrim). The White people had the right of way when in vehicle, and Blacks couldn’t go to the same places. They also thought it handled social control over the people. One major reason the laws were put into action was because it protected the White women from rape from the Black men (Pilgrim). The laws created lynching, which was believed to have helped with the raping of Whites women also. The lynching was entertainment for the whites. Lynching was one of the main punishments (Pilgrim). Blacks were hung from a tree, so all could see. Death and expulsion was the main goal for the Whites toward the blacks (Pilgrim). Blacks were beaten, shot, hung, staked and much more. Mobs were sent to destroy everything Blacks had. There lives, homes, personal belongings, and property. Everything Blacks had was ruined (Pilgrim). Racism is the power over others, and to overtake different people. Racism for some people was a self-booster. It also gives them self worth, they make them feel like they are better. Whites strived to be superior over the Blacks. (Routledge). The way people were raised is why racism is a huge factor. Survival plays a huge part in racism because it makes people act in a different way. Fights start between the Blacks and the Whites of how they were raised, and what they believe in. In racism there is two parts to it, it’s the rulers and the ruled (Schafer). In this case the rulers are the Whites, and the ruled is the Blacks. Whites get what they want, while the Blacks pay the consequences. Everything that happens between the whites and the blacks never goes unnoticed, everything is seen, and known about. Whites want Dominance over the Blacks (Routledge). Whites demand power and attempt to seize it over the Blacks (Schafer). Racism is also evident in To Kill a Mockingbird. One fact about racism is that the main goal in racism is to keep the power over others (Schafer). In To Kill a Mockingbird Mr. Gilmer as questions with tons of power and makes the Witness brake down inside. At one point in the story Mr. Gilmore waited while Mayella collected herself after he asked a couple of questions so she was ready for the next one (Lee 205).
