Is Scout a Reliable Narrator? In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the protagonist, who happens to be the narrator, is Scout Finch a six-year old girl who lives in Maycomb, Alabama. Since Scout is a very young child the book contains many hyperboles, or a literary device in which an author uses specific words or phrases that exaggerate and overemphasize the basic statement in order to produce a grander, more noticeable effect. So is this a detriment or an asset to the book? To begin, allowing a child this young narrate a book allows there to be situations where the literate, meaning rather than the intent is taken in.
