Lessons of To Kill a Mockingbird “Life is a matter of what you learn and how you learn it”. To me, this quote means that people would learn many different lessons from life experiences.To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee taught me as well as the characters in the novel a lot about morals from their learned experiences. In To Kill a Mockingbird, there are many characters who learned some important lessons from their experiences of life. One example is the narrator,Scout. Another example is Scout’s brother, Jem. When Atticus accepted to defend Tom Robinson, Jem’s life appeared to have a lot of gossip about his father. One of Jem’s neighbors , Mrs. Dubose, a cantankerous, vile, elderly woman , made a nasty remark about Atticus. This made Jem so angry, he destroyed Mrs.Dubose’s bushes. After Atticus found out, Atticus let Jem to spend time reading books for Mrs.Dubose. After a period of time, Mrs.Dubose stopped Jem to come to her house for reading books and Atticus found out that Mrs.Dubose was died. Atticus told Jem that Mrs. Dubose was addicted to morphine, and she wanted to wear herself off of them before she died. Mrs.Dubose let Jem to read books to her because she could be distracted. During this process, Jem learned how to respect an old woman and understood that for all her faults that she also has strengths. It helps Jem to learned what is bravery is and helped him become a braver boy. Meanwhile, Jem also learned that no matter what race people are, everyone is equal. Because Jem joined the whole process of Tom Robinson case, he knew that even the evidences were pointing to Bob Ewell, Tom Robinson still was being trialed as guilty and was killed. Jem first time to experience that how discrimination can kill people. Jem learned through this case that he should not be discriminated against
