“To Kill A Mockingbird” Harper Lee uses the quote: “Storms make trees grow deeper roots” This applies to a person because in life people make mistakes, but the good thing is everyone has time and room to grow. Lee references this all throughout her novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird.” Jem and Scout, the kids in the story, grow and become more mature: Also, learning many life lessons along the way.

According to the text, “Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square" (Lee 6). Lee uses imagery to paint a picture in the reader's mind, not only to imagine it but also to connect the coming of age concept because Scout saw the town as old and gross at first but then her perspective changes at the end of the book. Such as, when she sees the happiness and importance of Maycomb. Another example of imagery in “To Kill A Mockingbird” is when Scout changes her mind about Maycomb and how special it is to her. The text states, “Street lights winked down the street all the way to town. I have never seen our neighborhood from this angle. There was Miss Maudies, Miss Stephanie’s- there was our house, I could see the porch swing-” (Lee 320) Lee shows how Scout's viewpoint changes throughout the story, in this specific scene, Scout doesn’t think her town is so dumpy anymore she actually saw the light in her town which shows a switch in her …show more content…
As Lee stated on page : (Lee 120) “Scout,” said Atticus, “when summer comes you’ll have to keep your head about far worse things…it’s not fair for you and Jem, I know that, but sometimes we have to make the best of things, and the way we conduct ourselves when the chips are down – well, all I can say is when you and Jem are grown, maybe you’ll look back on this with some compassion and some feeling that I didn’t let you down.” Lee is showing coming of age by Atticus saying how someday Scout will understand why he made the decisions he did. Lee also showed tone by using life lessons as a way to have readers understand that not everything is always our way and we have to accept that, even if we don’t agree with some of the decisions that were made, if only for the best for us. A second example of Lee using tone is on page: (Lee 195) “You’ve got everything to lose from this, Atticus. I mean everything.” Lee shows her positivity and happiness in this quote. One thing that is really important in “To Kill A Mockingbird” is her passion to teach life lessons and her way of writing proves
