“Whenever one person stands up and says, ‘Wait a minute, this is wrong,’ it helps other people to do the same.” (Gloria Steinem) This quote explains that when one person stands up for what is right, other people will see it and hopefully follow in that person's footsteps. Even though it sounds easy to do this, it is very hard. This can be hard because the opposite of this can happen. If one doesn’t stand up for what is right, then other people won't stand up for what is right. Someone not standing up for what is just can be caused by pressure from people around them. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, gives us insight into many ideas of justice and standing up for the right thing. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus in the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life.”(247) Bob Ewell is Mayella’s father, who potentially beat Mayella up, not Tom. He blamed Tom for raping his daughter so he wouldn’t have to get in any trouble. Even though Atticus was being threatened, he still held to his morals and didn’t let the people around him stop him from standing up for what was just. In order to protect someone else, one might not stand up for his rights. When someone is the only person who believes in something, they often change their ideas to match their peers. After the case is over, Atticus and the children are talking and Atticus says to them, “You might like to know that there was one fellow who took considerable wear down.” After thinking for a second Jem realizes who Atticus is talking about and shouts, “[it was] One of the Cunninghams?”(254) This shows us that one of the Cunninghams did indeed believe that Tom was innocent but were pressured into voting for him to be guilty. Most likely everyone else on the jury voted Tom guilty, except for Walter
