No society is perfect. As much as we strive for the best, it is impossible to be impeccable. Both authors and musicians lean towards writing about events that are affecting them directly, or the society at which they live in. That being said, the literature and media at which many produce, highlight key social issues that individuals are faced with everyday. Literature and forms of media; including music reflect society's flaws in hopes to make the culture aware of the damages they are bringing on to others. Furthermore, throughout our highschool years we have both heard, and read about social flaws, and discovered that they mirror the society at which we live in. Weather it be because of their gender, race, social class or even age. Since so many people are experiencing this unfair treatment; it can without a doubt be classified as a flaw in society. Many authors and musicians have written about this topic, reflecting on the problem in hopes to raise awareness and create a change. When society reads or hears about major social issues including discrimination; it makes them reflect on themselves, the people around them and the society at which they live in. Throughout high school, many pieces of literature have highlighted this social concern. However, the one that was the most prominent was the grade 9 novel; To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Tom Robinson is one of the main characters in the novel, as well as a victim of discrimination. He experiences prejudice because he is an african american male living in a caucasian society. It is evident that he struggles with discrimination when he was wrongly asssuced of rapping a young white girl. The offence was taken to trial where he was found guilty despite the amount of evidence that was in favour of him. Oppression is the unjust exercise of authority for a long period of time. It’s clear that throughout history many people have been suffered from this unfair treatment, causing them to feel isolated and betrayed. A piece of literature that has been discussed in high school that highlight oppression is William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In this play, Juliet is oppressed by her family. They are very wealthy and noble ,and as a result they have limited her, her entire life. Her parents fail to give her empowerment over her own decisions her whole life. As a result, she feels of betrayed and isolated, ultimately being oppressed by them. These factors are highly influential in regards to her death. The unjust treatment she experiences is evident when Capulet says “Unworthy as she is, that we have wrought,/So worthy a gentleman to be her bride?,/But fettle your fine joints 'gainst Thursday next To go with Paris to Saint Peter’s Church,/Or I will drag thee on a hurdle thither.”(3, 5, 144-157) His apathetic, controlling personality is shown through these words thar he angrily says to his daughter. She is being downgraded and derided by her own father, making her feel oppressed. She is also majorly isolated because he is giving her no choice, no voice over her future.
