In the short story, Marth’s feelings changed throughout the whole passage. At first, Martha was excited and stimulated in hope that she might get the scholarship jacket. In the second paragraph it states, “This one, the scholarship jacket, was our only chance.” Clearly, Martha’s family could not afford to buy luxurious objects for Martha and Martha had missed out on many activities as a child. The scholarship jacket was free, and who wears it was determined by skill and observation, not money. Second, Martha was depressed and sad. In paragraph 5, it states “ I went home very sad and cried into my pillow that night so Grandmother wouldn’t hear me. It seemed a cruel coincidence that I had overheard that conversation.” Clearly, Martha figured out that she would not be getting the scholarship jacket that she had wished for all her life. First, the principal was uncertain about doing the correct thing, and caved in to do the wrong thing, and take the position away from Martha because he knew that she could not pay the money. On paragraph 9, it states,”This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won’t cover the complete cost of the jacket.” Clearly, the principal knew that doing this to martha was the incorrect thing to do, but still caved in and will make her pay. He feels bad for her, but he still chose the correct path. Next, the principal feels bad for Martha an makes the scholarship jacket free for here because she earned it. In paragraph 30, it states,”Okay. We’ll make an exception in your case. I’ll tell the Board, you’ll get your jacket.” Clearly, the principal caved in to the correct path and gave the jacket for free. He felt bad for martha and how hard she worked. Also, he was happy that she stood up for what she thought was right in life. That is how the principal
