Throughout the course of history, everytime new technology is invented, we stray further and further away from the natural state of the world. Of course technology is essential to progress as a species, but how far can we bend the laws of nature before it spits something terrible in our faces. In Frankenstein by Mary Shelly, Victor, the main character, is a scientist who creates a monster by electrocuting stitched together parts of dead humans. This monster, who Victor neglected, came back, and ruined his life by killing many of Victor’s loved ones. Although the monster kills many throughout the book, I believe that Victor is the true villain of Frankenstein. One of the reasons I believe Victor is the true villain of Frankenstein is because of his lack of compassion and nurturing for his own creation. Frankenstein abandons his creation right after he makes it, not even speaking a word to it. The monster tells Victor that he would be with him on his wedding night, instead of staying with his wife and protecting her, Victor leaves the room and comes back after he hears a scream, only to see “The murderous mark of the fiend’s grasp was on her neck, and the breath had ceased to issue from her lips.” Shelly 128. Victor knew that he was being targeted by the monster on his wedding night, and he didn’t think to protect his wife, only himself.
