I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book is about a girl, named Scout, her brother Jem, and the people who lived in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Along with their summer friend, Dill, the children become obsessed with the idea of getting a look at their unseen neighbor, Boo Radley. Meanwhile, their father, Atticus Finch, decided to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who was wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. The children get caught up in the trial, in which Tom is convicted and eventually killed while trying to escape from prison.
The book is about a young white woman named Mayella Ewell who falsely accused an Black man named Tom Robinson of rape. Mayella is not a well respected person in Maycomb County, Alabama. This comes from being the daughter of Bob Ewell who is a not respected person in Maycomb because he abuses his family and especially Mayella both physically and sexually. Scout is a young girl who is growing up with the argument that surrounds her father's court case. Atticus Finch, her father, is a lawyer who is defending a black man named Tom Robinson. Tom was charged with raping a white girl. The lives of the characters are changed by Maycomb’s worst disease which is racism and this is shown throughout the book, but in chapter 12 we see the side of reverse discrimination involving the blacks to the whites.

First, Scouts father, Atticus, a lawyer, was defending a negro man named Tom Robinson. Tom was a good hearted man, but perceived differently because he was black. Tom was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, Bob Ewell’s daughter. Atticus takes this case in defending Tom. Tom passes the Ewell house everyday from work, and sees Mayella sitting on the porch.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee manipulates the character of Tim Johnson to represent the social fabric of Maycomb by showing how the citizens act towards racism. Taking place in Alabama, during the 1930s, the world still sees a separation between the blacks and whites. Blacks were still highly subjugated people who were not permitted to appear talking publically with whites. Tim Johnson, a rabid dog, symbolizes the prejudiced and segregated ways of the people in Maycomb towards the blacks and defenders of black like Atticus Finch. Additionally, this develops the distinctiveness that Mr.Cunningham dosent pay full attention to concepts and dosent fully understand the significance of the choices that he acquires.
