The book and movie “To Kill a Mockingbird”, shows how the racial discrimination was in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s. However one of the main charaters Tom Robinson was accused of raping and beating up a white woman. Even with all the hate in the town against him and knowing he could possibly be killed, he stood up for his innocence. Tom Robinson is a man of courage, honesty, and a hard working man. Tom Robinson plays an important role in the novel because he represents the victim of black people during that period of time. Tom Robinson's court trial was a reminder of the unjustice and unfair treatment of the law. Tom's court trial is the middle of the novel and also the book. Even being aware of the consequences of what he’s doing, he agrees to help Mayella Ewell a white woman. When she accuses him of raping her and beating her up, Tom keeps acting innocent telling the truth even when it could get him killed if he did so. He was willing to risk his life to prove his innocence of what he didn’t do and he did just that. Tom Robinson is a man of honesty, when everyone thought he wasn’t telling the truth he remained unfazed and continued to tell the truth in the courtroom. However when they would try to see if he was lying Mr. Finch would ask Robinson a question which proved he couldn’t do that which should have proved he was an innocent man. Robinson is a hard working man, in the 1930’s any white person could call the black people really bad names, also make fun of them, and make them do what they wanted them to do. Robinson was just walking down the street on August 21st, 1930 when Mayella asked him to come into the yard and help her bust her chifferobe for a nickel, so that’s what Mr. Robinson did because he’s a hard working man. Mayella explained that Robinson choked her, took advantage of her, Tom explained “ he can’t move his left arm because he hurt it at the age of
