I’m Helen Robinson, Tom Robinson’s wife. There was a timeframe in the book just after Tom was killed, before Helen could find a secure way to earn money for her family; it was a very unstable time for her and her children. Although Helen is portrayed as meek and kindhearted, much like Tom, the overwhelming sadness and pressure may have caused her to break down emotionally, or feel some emotions of vengeance towards a majority of the white community; especially the Ewells. In the novel, the black church provides her with funding and support while Tom is in court.

After hours of waiting, the jury came back in. Scout explains how “A jury never looks at the defendant if it has convicted, and when this jury came in, not one of them looked at Tom Robinson… Judge Taylor was polling the jury; ‘ Guilty...Guilty...Guilty’”(211) When Scout and Jem hear the verdict, they are distraught. As they were walking home, “It was Jem’s turn to cry.. ‘It’s not right, Atticus’”(212)
Near the end of the court case, we see how optimistic Jem is about the verdict, as he states to Reverend Sykes “Don’t fret it, we’ve won it. Don’t see how any jury could convict on what we heard” (Lee 221). However, Jem is soon heartbroken after the jury convicts Tom Robinson for his crime and complains about it to Atticus by shouting “It ain’t right. He didn’t kill anybody even if he was guilty” (Lee 232).

During the Tom Robinson trial, Jem shows tremendous bravery in his willingness to admit his views on the situation. Doing so meant defying the social rules of the time and subjecting himself to the ridicule that came with siding against the popular opinion. The story’s subplot, the Radley conflict, illustrates the growth it took to bring Jem to this moral standpoint. At the beginning of the novel, Jem frequently mentions the rumors regarding the Radley place and its inhabitants, believing them though there is little evidence to support the claims. Even though Jem daringly ventured past the fence, he still holds the same beliefs as the other schoolchildren; the Radleys and their home are dangerous and should be feared.
