Throughout history races have been oppressed. Even after being freed are scared of their previous captors. We see that in this case because even though Tom Robinson is free he still has the mindset of a slave. Tom though free hasn 't pursued an education, which could help him make more money to help his family.
The jury had return from making their decision. It took forever for them to make a decision, which means that they thought really hard about their verdict and that they might find Tom not guilty. As the paper was handed to Judge Taylor the word that come to play put me in complete shock. “Guilty…guilty…guilty…guilty…” was all I heard the jurors’ say. I could not believe what I heard; Tom Robinson was found guilty of raping and beating 19 year old Mayella Ewell.
Tom Robinson was a kind and compassionate being. The only thing Tom was guilty of was that he “felt right sorry for [Mayella]” (264). Atticus stated, in the courtroom, that Mr. Robinson’s “case should have never come to trial” (271). Even all the evidence clearly shows that Tom Robinson is innocent, for example, Mayella Ewell was beaten on the right side of her face. Therefore, Mayella was “beaten savagely by someone who led almost exclusively with his left hand” (272).
The jaw of every human in Maycomb County dropped as Judge Taylor said “guilty… guilty… guilty… guilty...” (240). It is apparent that Tom Robinson is innocent; however, society’s racist norms impacted the verdict far more than the facts. Actually, during the setting of To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, it was commonplace during the 1930’s in Alabama to always take the word of a white man over that of a black man. Although Atticus proves beyond a doubt that Tom Robinson did not rape Mayella Ewell, the jury convicts him despite the overwhelming evidence pointing at Bob Ewell as the perpetrator.
“You did the crime, now you do the time,” this age old adage is currently being used to describe Tom Robinson and the case against him; however, Tom will no longer serve time, considering that police officers murdered him when he attempted to flee from prison. A legion of people believes that Tom Robinson’s actions ultimately led to his demise, and that he is just another worthless human. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.

It is set in 1933-1935 in a fictional town in Alabama called Maycomb which is where a young man is tried for a crime that didn’t take place, the rape of a young woman. It is told from the view of three small children called Jem, Scout and Dill. It was published in 1960 by Harper Lee and won the Pulitzer prize the next year.
Yesterday was Tom Robinson’s trial. I cannot explain how frustrated I am. I finally understand in what cruel society i am in. I cannot believe that the Maycomb folks took their prejudge into the trial. I was so confident about the trial.
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper E. Lee demonstrates that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird by symbolically representing the mockingbird as Tom Robinson; a man who is first arbitrarily prosecuted, then deprived of his innocence, and mercilessly shot down for an infraction that he did not commit. Tom Robinson was charged with rape and given a death sentence solely because of his accusations against a white lady. Scout is aware that Tom was never at fault and that the community of Maycomb with its rooted racism that found him guilty. First of all, Tom Radley was a non-actor. Tom was charged with rape and later proved guilty; he was given the death penalty.
How did prejudice happen in this world that God made? Prejudice is an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. (Pg 276) A person that has control on the outcome didn’t even stand up to help the trial of Tom Robinson. This unjust area is completely dependent to the racial thoughts in Maycomb. Not only that but black people aren’t welcomed into this area due to the possible punishment that could happen to them. They could be held accountable for something they didn’t even do.
The arguments for and against the reparations of slavery both contain valid points. The legacy of slavery continues to affect Black Americans even today. As a result, slavery has led to major racial inequality and has caused nearly one third of the Blacks to live in poverty. However, paying reparations has the potential to become deeply complicated. One argument for reparations is that it would allow the United States to address a major racial issue.
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a novel about a girl named Scout and her family during the course of three summers. The story takes place in Alabama in the 1930s during the Great Depression and segregation. Scout’s father Atticus defends a black man named Tom in a rape case against a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Tom’s character teaches us readers about courage in many ways. He displays real courage by speaking his mind while in court.
