It’s a hot and humid day and all of Maycomb is gathered to find out the truth behind what happened on the evening of November 21. The person in question is Tom Robinson an African American servant. He was accused by Mayella and Bob Ewell for rape of Mayella. The defendant, Tom Robinson, is supported and assisted by defence attorney Atticus Finch who is going against prosecuting attorney Mr.Gilmer. The courthouse was filled with people from all races, where the blacks sat in the balcony and the whites sat front and center in the lower level. To the left of the Judge Taylor, owner of the court, sat twelve white men also known as jurors that were to decide the fate of Tom Robinson. Judge Taylor also asked if Mr. Ewell can speak appropriately and properly in court and Mr. Ewell agreed. After all the commotion died down Mr. Gilmer proceeded and asked about the distance between the window and the ground. Mr.Ewell stated that it was about three feet above ground. Mr. Gilmer also asked if he had a clear view of the room and Mr. Ewell said yes. Mr.Ewell continued on with his story, he explained how everything in the room was out of place and how once he saw Tom Robinson, Robinson ran away and instead of catching him he decided to go check on his daughter and go grab Mr.Tate so they can arrest Robinson. Mr.Ewell was held at the stand once again by Mr.Finch. The questioning continued with details about Mr.Ewell's encounter with Robinson and whether what Mr.Tate testified seems correct; Mr.Ewell agreed with Mr.Tate's testimony and so Mr.Finch continued his questioning. After Mr.Finch asked if Mr. Ewell can read and write and that’s when Mr.Gilmer interrupted and said “Objection. Can’t see what witness’s literacy has to do with the case, irrelevant ’n’ immaterial.” When Judge Taylor was about to speak Mr. Finch requested if he would allow the question and one more because it will affect the trial and Judge Taylor accepted the request and had Mr.Finch
