Yesterday evening at 5:30 pm, Tom Robinson declared that he is innocent and admitted to doing no crime for the accusation of the Mayella Ewell rape trial incident which took place at the Southern town of Maycomb courthouse.
Tom Robinson spoke his side of the story ever since the trial began and requested not guilty, because he stated that he had committed no crime at the residence of the Ewells. However, protesters of Maycomb believe that he is not speaking the truth about the incident.
According to Mayella Ewell, the rape incident took place at her very own home on the evening of November 21st last year. She asked Tom Robinson to fix one of her 'chifferobe' because she did not have the ability to fix it herself. Mayella offered a nickel in exchange for Tom Robinson helping her with the chifferobe. Tom Robinson had no evidence, but according to Mayella's statement of her right eye, Tom Robinson could not have done that due to him being a right handed man with his left hand being disabled. According to Atticus Finch, a person who would be left handed would have been able to hurt Mayella right eye.
His defendant lawyer, Atticus Finch, believes Tom Robinson is framed of this chaos. Atticus Finch thinks Mayella had an interest towards black men due to Tom's side of the story. Since Bob Ewell had witnessed the incident, he did not want his daughter and the Ewells reputation to be ruined.
Tom Robinson in court has told Judge Taylor that "she reached up an' kissed me 'side of th' face. She says she never kissed a grown man before an' she might as well kiss a n*****. She says what her papa do to her don't count. She says, 'Kiss me back, n*****.' I say Miss Mayella lemme outa here an' tried to run but she got her back to the door an' I’da had to push her.
