Mayella feels guilty after lying under oath in court. Mayella lied about Tom Robinson raping her because she doesn't want her dad to beat her up if she tells the truth. PARTIES Members of the jury, the state will review the evidence against Mayella Ewell who let her greed influence her decision to lie under oath. While her father Bob Ewell forced her to lie about the case so he wouldn't be
Good Morning. We are here today to determine if Mayella Ewell was telling the truth when she testified at the trial of Tom Robinson. There are no excuses for not telling the truth. Mayella claimed she was attacked and raped by Tom Robinson. I will prove that Mayella was not telling the truth and that it was her father, Robert Ewell, who attacked and raped her that day.
Opening statement for Mayella Ewell Good afternoon, my name is Alex, and it is my pleasure to represent Maycomb County and to serve as a prosecutor in this important case. My theory of why Mayella Ewell lied in court is she thought she could get away with it because she is white and my reason for claiming guilt is because the Ewells and Tom's stories do not match up. On August 26, 1935, the defendant in this matter lied inside the courtroom under oath about what really happened on the evening of November 21st. On the evening of November 21st, 1934 “Mayella Ewell said that she invited Tom inside to bust up a chifferobe but she said he snuck up behind her and was taking advantage of her.
This is getting tense from the moment when the court begins. I read the three testimonies that accuse Tom Robinson for raping Mayella. As a bookworm, I don’t believe that liar because the way the author describes her reaction when she is being question. For example, this quote shows how Mayella didn’t answer for three times which shows she is lying and hiding something that can make Tom Robinson not guilty. In Mayella’s point of view towards the case, she says how Tom Robinson (whose left hand is shorter) raped her.
This act of hers has left Tom in jail, and his children and wife alone. We hope you listen carefully and thoughtfully to seek the truth of Mayella Ewell's crime. Now, jury members, I will go over the evidence while the county reviews it. Mayella Ewell was under oath on August 21st, over the case of Tom Robinson when she lied. She is said to have called Tom over to bust her chiffarobe, when he had gotten on top of her, then attacked and taken advantage of her.
While this was occurring Tom ran out of the house because he was confused. The Ewells came up with a story stating that Tom raped Mayella and they went to court for it. Eventually, it was found out that Mayella lied to hide the embarrassment of trying to kiss an African American man along with trying to make herself feel better. Bob Ewell wanted to accuse Tom to cover his own tracks in abusing his daughter. Yet, with all this information and evidence Tom’s verdict was guilty.
Ladies and gentlemen, this case is about how Mayella broke her promise to the town of Maycomb Country by lying under oath. She lied because she was embarrassed that she tried to kiss Tom first and she did not want to expose her dad for beating her. Pieces of evidence that show Mayells is guilty are when she says “. . . Papa told me to do it while he was. . .”
Good morning, my name is Holly Eksten and I'm more than excited to present the results of this trial against Mayella Ewell. This very important case involving Mayella Ewell and the court system is because Mayella lied in court under oath to save herself. I feel that Mayella Ewell lied under oath because she wanted to save her name and reputation. She lied under oath during the case of Mayella Ewell against Tom Robinson. In that case, she said Tom had raped her.
Opening Statement for Mayella Ewell Good morning members of the jury. Defendant Mayella Ewell took the easy way out. She takes the easy way out because she doesn't want her dad to bear her up if she tells the truth, so she lies under oath. Mayella Ewell lies under oath because she's afraid of Bob Ewell, her father, and she's embarrassed by her attraction to Tom Robinson. Mayella Ewell tells the jury that Tom beat and raped her when it was her father that beat and raped her when her father saw Mayella hugging and kissing an African American.
Good afternoon, my name is Claire Gruber, it is my pleasure to represent the state of Maycomb and to serve as the prosecutor in this important case. On November 21, Mayella Ewell lied because she was scared of her father and what he would do to her if she told the truth. The theme of this case is that Mayella thought she could get away with lying. Mayella Ewell said that Tom Robinson raped her and she went to court and lied about Tom Robinson. Members of the jury, the evidence in this case will show how Mayella Ewell lied about being raped.
Mayella wasn’t able to speak on her behalf because she is a female. As stated (document “D”), Tom had been accused of lying because of his race they questioned him on why he ran from Mayella when she tried to hug and kiss on him. Mayella couldn’t say anything in her defense when Tom said “she came on to me” all she could do is sit there quietly. She wouldn’t make her case better because they already know she’s lying. She knew that if she was to say something they would catch her in her lies and know her as more than just not classy they would know her as a liar as well.
Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.
Immanuel Kant, a German philosopher, is one of the most influential philosophers in the history of Western Philosophy. Based on the principles of Kantianism, certain types of actions are allowed, even in cases where the action would bring more happiness than the alternative. On the other hand, philosopher Jeremy Bentham, the founder of Utilitarianism, argues on the moral rightness of a decision based on its outcome. Clearly, both moral theories have had an immense impact that have carried on in today’s society as well.
The saddening thing is, that the whole scenario started because Mayella attempted to seduce Tom, and her father found out. Filled with rage, Mr. Ewell beat his daughter, he found it unacceptable that his daughter fancied a black man. Then, he claimed that Tom raped his daughter to cover everything up. There are even cases such as Tom’s happening to this day, such as the case of Miguel Angel Peña Rodriguez Vs. Colorado. The jury was corrupted by bias thoughts which resulted in an unfair trial.
First, she had to make up a story about Tom Robinson because she had kissed a black man, which was frowned upon for a white woman to do. “She was white and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society in unspeakable: she kissed a black man”(272). Mayella is also used as an example when she convinces the jury to convict an innocent black man because of Southern Womanhood. “That n***** took advantage of me, an’ if you fine fancy gentlemen don’t wanna do nothin’ about it then you’re all yellow stinkin’ cowards, stinkin’ cowards, the lot of you”(251).
