Good afternoon, my name is Claire Gruber, it is my pleasure to represent the state of Maycomb and to serve as the prosecutor in this important case. On November 21, Mayella Ewell lied because she was scared of her father and what he would do to her if she told the truth. The theme of this case is that Mayella thought she could get away with lying. Mayella Ewell said that Tom Robinson raped her and she went to court and lied about Tom Robinson. Members of the jury, the evidence in this case will show how Mayella Ewell lied about being raped. “I was on the porch and-and he came along and, you see, there was this old chiffarobe in the yard papa’d bought in to chop up for kindlin’-Papa told me to do it while he was off in the woods but I wadn’t feelin’ strong enough so then, so he came by-” Mayella …show more content…
“Reckon I did, hollered for all I was worth, kicked and hollered loud as I could” (Lee 205). “My paw’s never touched a hair o’ my head in my life,” she declared. “He never touched me” (Lee 209). “No, I don't remember if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me” (Lee 210). I am proposing guilt that Tom Robinson did not rape Mayella Ewell and she lied about him helping her with the chiffarobe on the porch. Tom is crippled with his left arm and can not use it, therefore he could not hit Mayella in the right eye. All of the bruises on Mayella were on the right side of her neck and eye. Members of the jury claim that Tom Robinson raped Mayella and that she was attacked on her porch. However, ladies and gentlemen, Tom chopped up a chiffarobe last year and would help Mayella often with things she asked him to do. The defense may say that Mayella was raped and Tom should go away and be guilty of it. The only reason the defense would agree that Tom raped Mayella would be because Bob watched her being revealing towards Tom and to avoid getting into trouble Mayella said Tom raped
