Kirkwood, Madison Mr. Shipp English 1 CP 17, May, 2024 Original Title In To Kill A Mockingbird there are several times where the characters start to judge a book by its cover. During the book, there are multiple accusations and false statements that spread throughout the town. The characters who were set out to be bad were not always as they turned out to be. People are not always who we think they are going to be. At the start of the book, the townspeople viewed Tom Robinson as a scary person. Mostly everybody that lived in Maycomb saw Tom as a bad person because he had been wrongly accused of doing a crime that was not his. Accusing Tom Robinson of this caused him to get the death penalty even though he was not proven guilty in court. Atticus was the one to defend Tom Robinsion in court during chapters 9 and 10. He was trying to help prove Tom is innocent, even though there was a very small chance of them winning the court case. Atticus was attempting to get the townspeople to believe that Tom did not commit the act of rape. As Tom explained what happened the day before, he explained it as he was walking home from a long day at work and Mayella had called him over from her front porch. Mayella had asked Tom to help her get the box down since she could not do it on her own. Tom agreed to help her, so he walked over to her. Once Tom had gotten the box down for Mayella, she had told him to fall onto the ground and kiss her. After this occurred, Tom had been wrongly accused of beating and raping her while Mayella knew the truth. The scene also had a witness who was Mr. Finch, but he still let the town believe that he was the one who had raped Mayella.
