This past week has been rough for the Robinson family. After a racist jury choose to make an innocent man guilty things went from bad to worse. Atticus Finch was chosen to defend Tom Robinson. This particular case was against Mayella Ewell, a white woman. As a black man Tom was already at a disadvantage.
In Chapter 16, Tom Robinson's trial starts with the attendance of almost every one of the Maycomb citizens except Miss Maudie who doesn’t want to see a man’s fate decided in court. Jem explains the history of Mr. Raymond, a man who came to the trial, to Scout. Mr. Raymond has children and is involved with a black women. Their children are mixed races and have a difficult time befriending either race. This causes their whole family to be outcasts in the town.

When Bob Ewell enters the house to assist with Mayella’s situation, Tom had already left the residence through the front door. After adjusting to the situation, Bob raced to Heck Tate to inform him about the issue. Bob Ewell provided that he saw the room was “slung about” as if “there was a fight”, resulting in Mayella to be “on the floor squallin’”.

On November 21, Mayella Ewell was the victim of rape, the crime was allegedly committed by Tom Robinson, who claims not to have done it. Mr. Robinson says that Mayella attempted to kiss him and grabbed him around the waist, while he was standing on a chair that broke because he fell off while trying to reach a chiffarobe Mayella asked him to break up into kindling. Mayella said he tried to rape her and beat her, there are two sides to the story. I believe that Mayella lied under oath, I believe she lied for a life, for it to not be her, for it to not be someone she knows behind bars for a crime that she didn’t commit.

People are not always who we think they are going to be. At the start of the book, the townspeople viewed Tom Robinson as a scary person.

Tom is a hard working, African American man who was wrongly accused of raping a white woman. Atticus Finch, a white male lawyer, was given his case. Atticus is one of the only people in this time period and in the county of Maycomb that would take this case and prove his innocence.

Even when everybody was against Atticus he stood up for himself and did what he believed was right. There are many great characters in the book To Kill a Mockingbird, but Tom Robinson is definitely one of the greatest. Tom is a black man who lived a good life and never got into trouble until he got accused of raping a girl. It turns out he was innocent but was still tried guilty because he was black and the whole jury for the trial was white. However, Atticus Finch always knew the truth and always supported Tom and his family.
