I believe Tom Robinson isn’t guilty. Some ways I could tell this is how he presents his case, his mannerisms, and also how his injuries can make him unable to commit the said crime. The plaintiffs and witnesses supporting them did not present their information in that way. Many of the testimonies were conducted improperly, or weren’t said confidently. Hector Tates was very contradictory, Bob Ewells was disorderly, and Mayellas was abruptly emotional.
Good afternoon, my name is Lucy Caughey, and it is my pleasure to represent Maycomb County and to serve as prosecutor in this important case. On November 21, Mayella Ewell was the victim of rape, the crime was allegedly committed by Tom Robinson, who claims not to have done it. Mr. Robinson says that Mayella attempted to kiss him and grabbed him around the waist, while he was standing on a chair that broke because he fell off while trying to reach a chiffarobe Mayella asked him to break up into kindling. Mayella said he tried to rape her and beat her, there are two sides to the story. I believe that Mayella lied under oath, I believe she lied for a life, for it to not be her, for it to not be someone she knows behind bars for a crime that she didn’t commit.
On November 21, Tom Robinson is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. This court all believes and will take Mayella Ewell and Mr. Ewell’s side for this case is a white woman against a black man. Mr. Ewell, the witness, said that he saw a “strong looking black man” punch his daughter in the right eye. According to the witness, that means Tom must have hit Mayella Ewell with his left arm. Tom’s left arm, however is completely obsolete for it is completely withered away from a prior incident.
So this mean that his left arm is does not work. If you look at where on her body, she was beating by somebody left hand. Incidentally her father Bob Ewell is left handed and he was very angry at her. In short, Tom Robinson is not capable of beating Mayella Ewell with his left hand because Mayella Ewell when she take the witness stand, she changes her story all the time so Tom Robinson is not feel guilty at all so
Tom Robinson was falsely accused of rape and killed by the community. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”, Mayella Ewell accused a man named Tom Robinson of rape. He pleaded guilty, but the finches knew he was innocent all along. Tom Robinson was shot in jail seventeen times by a guard and killed. Tom was a nice man, and the community and jury were evil.
Darrian Stocker Mrs. Lawson English 20 May 2024 White man's words against a black man's words Colored people are sometimes accused of things they did not do in Harper Lee's book To Kill a Mockingbird. This book was placed in Maycomb. One of the characters, Tom Robinson, was accused of rape even though the evidence shows that he did not do it. Atticus, his lawyer, tried to help him, but he couldn't since the council didn't listen to Atticus because he was defending a black person. Tom Robinson was accused of rape even tho the evidence made him not guilty, but if he was not guilty, why did he keep coming back to help her if he didnt want to be convicted of something he didnt do?
The eighth amendment is related to the To Kill A Mockingbird story because they wanted to give Tom Robinson the death penalty for something he didn't do. He was accused of rape, but they didn't give him a fair trial. So it was cruel and unusual punishment and false testament in this situation. Black people would get death penalties or life in prison if they committed a crime.
In the trial in a fictional novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. I firmly believe the jury's verdict should be that Tom is innocent. I believe the jury should arrive at this verdict because Tom had lost his left arm in cotton gin accident and Mayella was beaten on the right side of her face. “If her [Mayella's] right eye was blackened and she was beaten mostly on the right side of her face, it would be likely that a left-handed person did it” (238). It would be practically impossible for Tom to hurt the right side of Mayella’s face because his left arm is crippled.
“His left arm was fully 12 inches shorter than his right, and hung dead at his side” (Lee, 211). This is saying that it could not really be Tom because he does not even have a left hand. And someone that is left-handed is the one to have potentially have beaten up Mayella. And with everything else that they say about Mr. Ewell is making it seem like he is the only person that could have done it. Some examples it says are that he drinks all the time and he is never there for his children so Mayella is always trying to take care of them.
”Atticus,Tom’s lawyer, was trying to show...that Mr. Ewell could have beaten up Mayella… if her right eye was blacked and she was beaten mostly on the right side of the face, it would tend to show that a left-handed person did it”(ch 17). Tom Robinson’s hand was seriously injured in a cotton gin accident, therefore it was impossible for him to strike Mayella’s right side of her face. This shows that the justice in the city and people in the city favor whites.
There was undeniable evidence that Tom Robinson did not rape Mayalla. Mayalla had a bruise on her left eye and even when they found out he could not use his left hand, they did not believe him. The jury also knows that Mr. Ewell is left-handed. The definition of prejudice is an unfair and unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially when formed without enough thought or knowledge. Prejudice is the reason Tom Robinson was guilty, according to an all-white men's jury.
This claim indicates to us as readers that a left-handed
Making it hard for him to beat up a person. His bad arm also does match up with the accusation that he hit her left eye. Ewell on the other hand being dominant on the left hand could have the potential to hit her in the left eye, more so than Robinson. Atticus draws attention away from Tom and puts it on Bob Ewell. Saying he had motive and could be more than capable of beating Mayella.
Through the compelling court case of Tom Robinson and other relevant events, Harper Lee reveals that even in the most fair place to obtain justice, the courtroom, injustice has been and still is a part of society. Throughout most of the story, themes of injustice and bias, especially in race and gender, play a major role and impact the outcome of many events that take place. For example, the climax event of the book; the trial of Tom Robinson. Throughout the trial, the lawyer for the defendant, Atticus, repeatedly provides cunning and convincing evidence that shows Tom Robinson could not have been the attacker. Yet, in that time period, time and time again black people were convicted for crimes they did not commit, and Tom is unanimously convicted.
He stood up and pointed his finger at Tom Robinson. “—I saw that black person yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella!”(pg,172) Bob Ewell clearly shows discrimination as well as tries to use it against Tom Robinson. He knows that the entirety of the jury are white so he tries to get them to believe Tom is guilty purely because of the fact that he is black. So he is using discrimination in his words as well as in his actions to deflect the blame of Mayella’s beating and attack on Tom
