In the trial of Mayela Ewell and Tom Robinson, Atticus aska Mr. Ewell, Mayella's father, if he can sufficiently read or write. By asking Mr. Ewell to write his name in the presence of the Judge and Jury, Atticus is demonstrating that Mr. Ewell is infact, left-handed. Showing that Mr. Ewell is left-handed is crucial for Atticus, and for his defendant, because as readers we soon find that Tom's left arm was severly injured in an accident when he was a child.
The fact that Tom Robinson's left arm is unusable is also important to the trial because as we look back to earlier in the proceeding we hear Mr. Ewell says that he agrees with the claims of Mr. Tate that Mayella's right eye was blackened. This claim indicates to us as readers that a left-handed
