Should Students Be Paid for Good Grades? Paying students for grades has been a very debatable topic for the past decade; with students having the ability to earn hundreds of dollars. Students could earn over $100 every two weeks. As a seventh grader, up to $500 a year or more; and as a fourth grader, $250. In addition, many parents and teachers struggle over the prospect of giving their kids such a huge sum of money. Some parents and teachers prefer intrinsic rewards over extrinsic rewards. Others believe that these kinds of rewards are bribes and that they take away the value of education. This argumentative essay will focus on three key reasons why children should be paid for grades: achievement, motivation, and real world application. Students need to be paid for good grades in school according to how much they have achieved. In Document C, it states that “For students who were closest to the achievement standard, the financial incentives appear to have improved their performance by an average 30-40%.” Furthermore, in Document D, it states that “Researchers found that financial incentives improved high school students’ academic performance and behavior by 15 to 22 percent on average compared to students who were not offered the incentives.” This evidence

In Document A, it is said that “Cash-for-grades programs may jumpstart students' motivation by providing real world rewards for their effort and preformance.” Moreover, in Document E, it states “In Dallas, where kids were paid $2 for every book read, Fryer saw the largest uptick in quantifiable improvement, and that more books were read and students scored higher on reading comprehension tests.” This evidence shows that students are capable of actually doing well in school; and that these cash incentives will help them realize what they are able to
