Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel that has grown so much in popularity that Harper Lee has sold 40 million copies worldwide (Foca and Fine). Tom Robinson, a black man, went through so many struggles just because of the color of his skin which helped the world open its blind eye to racism. Tom Robinson, one of the mockingbirds of the story, has developed a narrative story of his life through the trial that led to his death. Tom Robinson was a character who was bold, and kind-hearted, his life should have never been taken from him; the world could learn from his story. His skin tone determined his fate before he was put on trial. Furthermore, Tom Robinson lost his life because the Town of Maycomb turned a blind eye to their racism. They put black people under a stereotype of how they believe some black people act. Every man has done immoral things; it has nothing to do with the color of your skin. In his closing argument, Atticus proclaims,‘“...confident that you gentlemen would go along with...that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings...you know the truth: some Negroes lie, some are immoral...but this is a truth that applies to the human race’” (Lee 232). Furthermore, not all people do the same things, we all have free will and just because some race does something immoral does not mean the whole race is sinful. Tom Robinson’s trial helped show that all men should be equal in the courtroom. There was undeniable evidence that Tom Robinson did not rape Mayalla. Mayalla had a bruise on her left eye and even when they found out he could not use his left hand, they did not believe him. The jury also knows that Mr. Ewell is left-handed. The definition of prejudice is an unfair and unreasonable opinion or feeling, especially when formed without enough thought or knowledge. Prejudice is the reason Tom Robinson was guilty, according to an all-white men's jury. After reading Mr. Underwood’s editorial, Scout realizes: “Atticus had every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men's hearts Atticus had no case” (Lee 276). Sadly, at this time in the South, slaves were free but black people still were under the Jim Crow laws and people did not see them as valued humans. Maycomb was blind and did not want to acknowledge his problems. Prejudice is the reason that Robinson was put in jail and later killed.
