Opening Statement for Mayella Ewell. Good afternoon, my name is Mckenna Hoheisel, and it is my delight to present the matter of Mayella Ewell in Maycomb County. On November 21st, 1934, Bob and Mayella Ewell claimed that Tom Robinson beat and raped Mayell. Mayella took the stand and went under oath to tell the full truth and nothing but the truth. Ladies and gentlemen, this case is about how Mayella broke her promise to the town of Maycomb Country by lying under oath. She lied because she was embarrassed that she tried to kiss Tom first and she did not want to expose her dad for beating her. Pieces of evidence that show Mayells is guilty are when she says “. . . Atticus also asked Mayella “Do you love your father Miss? Mayella”(Lee 245) and she answered him with “He does tollable ‘cept when” (Lee 245). The last two pieces of evidence are, “My paw’s never touched a hair o’my head in my life” (Lee 246). Finally, when Atticus asks Mayella, she asks Tom inside the fence and she says “I did not, I certainly did not”(Lee 246-247) and when asked again she says, “I mighta, there were several niggas around” (Lee 246-247). Mayella Ewell chose to lie under oath and accuse Tom of raping her. By telling this false statement and lying under oath, Mayella changed Tom’s life forever. Tom ended up getting sent to prison for this lie she told. He knew that he was not going to have a chance and won this case, which for him meant the electric chair.
