In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He is well known for being a Christian man, but Mr. Ewell claims he saw him raping his daughter. I believe Tom Robinson is innocent because of the Ewell family history, lack of evidence, and he has a disability that causes a problem with the testimony. The Ewell family is nowhere near perfect. Mr. Bob Ewell is known for his violent actions and words. In the trial, Atticus asks Mayella if her father is easy to get along with. She states that he is “tollable”, then begins to say something but stops herself. Atticus continues the statement by saying except when he's drinking, and she nods her head to confirm. That situation shows that he has an obvious drinking problem and can lose control. His drinking could get so out of control he could even hurt his own daughter. Bob Ewell claims he saw Tom on Mayella, but he did not call a doctor. Her injuries were very obvious and Mr. Ewell would have called a doctor from fatherly instincts. Also, Bob Ewell was the only witness of what happened that day. Therefore, he could be lying about what he saw. Bob Ewell called Sheriff Tate after he supposedly found Mayella.
