“The Devil and Tom Walker”, perhaps Washington Irving’s most famous work, details a story about a man named Tom Walker and his deal with the Devil. Throughout the story, Irving makes heavy use of satire: the usage of irony or other humors with the intent to mock the vices of humanity. We first see his satirization demonstrated with matrimony, revolving around Tom’s hatred of his own wife to the extent of relishing in her death. Next, he pokes fun at the wealthy white establishment, particularly slave-owners, by portraying them as totally immoral and worse than even the Devil. The final subject of Irving’s satire, and by far his largest one, is the way in which he depicts the Christian community as fueling the Devil’s power, contrary to what they want to believe.

Nature was introduced in romantic novels and poems. In the poem ‘’Thanatopisis’’ by William Cullen Bryant he described death to something that was peaceful and to be embraced. He believed that you become one with nature, one with earth once you die. But in the poem ‘’Devil and Tom Walker’’ by Washington Irving he described death to be evil, sinful. He believed death to horrifying and something to not be embraced.
Alice Walker uses narrative pace and diction to prepare the trade of what might just be a very gruesome ending. Throughout the short story she uses positive words to contrast the ending and the pace she uses gives a bigger impact towards what the main character Myop is about to experience. The first element I noticed was the contrast between the use of positive words in the beginning and negative words in the end. Throughout the short story Alice uses words like “skipped lightly” which gives us a sense of joy and happiness that is portrayed through Myop. And in the end she gives a sense of fear and wonder by using words like “The air was damp, the silence close and deep.”
Gatsby’s Accountability For His Murder Gatsby is a man whose actions lead to his own death. While some say that Tom or Daisy were responsible for Gatsby's death, Gatsby was the only one that should be held responsible. We can't control others, and unfortunately for Gatsby, we can't control time either, but we can control ourselves and our attitude and behavior.
