Gatsby’s Accountability For His Murder Gatsby is a man whose actions lead to his own death. While some say that Tom or Daisy were responsible for Gatsby's death, Gatsby was the only one that should be held responsible. We can't control others, and unfortunately for Gatsby, we can't control time either, but we can control ourselves and our attitude and behavior. While other characters cannot control their temper and emotions, based on the fact that they express whatever they feel and ignore obvious problems, Gatsby's actions made the largest impact on why he was killed. Daisy, being the one behind the wheel when Myrtle was hit, has an essential role in Gatsby's lavish lifestyle and decisions. If hypothetically Gatsby literally could not make his own decisions, it is probable that Daisy was the one most responsible for Gatsby's death. She connives to lead Gatsby on, a man who has loved her ever since their youth and has put on elaborate parties for the purpose of impressing her, a married woman. While her husband cheats on her, she chooses to ignore it and give him a taste of his own medicine while “loving” both men. "‘Oh, you want too much!’ she cried to Gatsby. ‘I love you now – isn't that enough? I can't help what's past.’ She began to sob helplessly. ‘I did love him once – but I loved you too.’” (7.261) In this quote, Daisy expresses how she has loved both men and cannot choose either one of them. She blames time itself and then goes on to let Gatsby accept the guilt of hitting Myrtle. This shows that she didn’t care all that much about Gatsby because she was willing to let him step in the path of danger to be killed just so that she doesn't get accused of something she actually
