The story of Tommy and Winter is one of heart break. She loved this boy, yet he couldn’t love himself. He was bad and only got worse. From childhood to adulthood she never took her eyes off of him and loved him despite who he was. She watched the train wreak from the sidelines and was perplexed by it all.
Tommy and Winter are neighbors. He was a strange boy from the start. He was "scrawny" and "doesn’t drink milk." Yet despite how he was she still loved him starting at the age of 5. They spent every day together. Her mom watched him after school. Winter would sit in the kitchen and just watch Tommy as he sat Indian style in front of the T.V. They begin to make up their own communication in the form of tapping. That same day she looked at Tommy and told him she loves him. And he only grinned. The next day she drew a picture of the two of them together, married with a baby. You could tell the mother was not happy with the drawing and knew Tommy was not a good kid that one would want their daughter be with. Winter writes about her mothers reaction, "her eyebrows say I shouldn’t marry tommy."

Who cared to write it? Who knew him enough to give 5 lines? How did his life go so wrong? Why him and not her? Although he went so far left in life. She stuck to her good girl mentality and pursued goals and dreams. She didn’t conform to his bad behavior just because she loved and cared about him. That had to be a hard thing to watch and to not be able to do anything about it. That takes courage to walk away and not get influenced by someone so dark. Who knows what those five lines said or what Tommy's reason was for feeling like he needed to end his life. All I know is that everyone gets molded by the life experiences that they have.
