Symbols are everywhere. Readers see symbols in all kinds of literary works. Symbols are used to represent ideas and concepts in literary works. Authors use symbols to help the readers understand themes. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the theme present is that societies need some kind of social order to live in peace.
Symbolism is when an author uses symbols to represent an idea. The authors of Documents A and B used this writing technique to perfection. Document A showed this a few times. Such as when Elie Wiesel, the author of Night, said “Never shall I forget those moments that murdered God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes. ”
One example of this is after Jerome gets shot we hear mom come into the picture and the book states “ Ma’s running, she’s wailing.” This shows tone because instead of saying Ma’s sad it expresses it more and makes it stand out. Another example of tone in this book is when shorty after Pop is in the apartment and says “Murdering my boy,” Pop’s fist slams the wall. The drywall cracks.
Thomas C. Foster states in his book How to Read Literature Like a Professor, that there are three main items to understanding literature. The first item is memory; Memory helps a reader connect works of literature with other experiences as a way of possibly better understating the writing at hand. Symbolism is the second item noted by Foster. Symbolism can be used to open a readers mind to the big picture being painted. Not all works of literature are as complicated, as to where symbolism is splattered through the pages.
The tone of the novel is very blunt and direct which makes it much easier for the reader to understand and get into. Tone refers to the author’s writing style and use of words to convey their attitude or feelings towards a topic. The tone of the author refers more to their attitude which is different from their voice, voice refers to their personality. Butler’s tone in the novel is very direct, but also melancholic. The story also includes a number of allusions, metaphors, symbolism, imagery, and more.
Symbolism allows the author to create a story that would otherwise be bland and monotone. Without this dark romantic element, books, short stories, and poems would not have as much meaning nor appealing detail. Symbolism in "The Raven," "The Devil and Tom Walker," and "The Minister's Black Veil," creates layers of meaning and interesting characters. Symbolism has been used for centuries to spice up the literary world. Sometimes it is used in obvious ways, but other time it has to be thoroughly studied to be imperturbably understood.
There are many tones observed in this narrative. Tone is defined as the general attitude of a piece of writing. A very important tone present shown through the novel is emotional. Throughout the narrative, Douglass truly lets his emotions run wild whether it was from telling his brutal experiences while enslaved or his famous speeches that really questioned what your view of freedom is. Overall, Frederick Douglass’s tone is generally straightforward and serious as he covers emotional, heart wrenching topics.
Symbolism is the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. In Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson uses literary devices to help the reader better understand Melinda’s personal changes and growth. Trees, lips, and coldness are all symbolically used to represent the changes of Melinda. Throughout the novel, trees play a big part in symbolizing Melinda. Melinda is constantly drawing and relating to trees in the book.
In his short story “Young Goodman Brown” Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbolism and imagery to show the concept of good versus evil. Symbolism is essential to literature because it helps create meaning and emotion in a story. Imagery is crucial to literature because it helps create a vivid experience for the reader. Hawthorne uses both to draw the reader in.
Revolution is an event that changes the life and politics of a certain person. Revolution can be both insignificant and radical. American revolutionary war was one of the best examples of radical revolution. The revolutionary war affected to American society in terms of politically, economically, and socially. The war was motivated by high taxation, such as Stamps Act, that British offered to Colonial people and unequal treatment that Colonial people went through.
Symbolism is when the author uses objects to add deeper meaning to the story without mentioning it in the story. In Flannery O’Connor’s story, “Good Country People”, she uses symbolism to illustrate the antagonist and protagonist with more insight; for example, Manley’s hollow Bible signify how he really does not believe in Christianity, Hulga’s wooden leg portrayed her personality, and her name change represents how she is not the same girl she once was. First of all, the author introduces Manley Pointer as a young man that goes around homes selling Bibles, but little did she know that was not the case. When Manley Pointer goes on a date with Hulga the truth is revealed. Hulga has the impression that Manley is a young nice man that sells Bibles
Tone, the general character or attitude the author has towards a piece of writing. The tone in “Harrison Bergeron” is represented, by the author, in a number of techniques that writers have in their arsenal such as, satire, irony, symbolism and diction. The author uses Satire many times thought this story to give us something to think about and ponder instead of giving us what we are supposed to think. For example; when he tells us about the ballerinas and how they are held down by weights and how a horrid mask covers their beauty, we are saddened and depressed by the fact that something so beautiful and wonderful has to be covered up and weighted down just for everyone to be normal and the same.
Symbolism can use an object (like a tree of birds), or art, (like Melinda’s art project or Mr. Freeman's canvas) to represent an abstract idea. Laurie Halse Anderson uses symbolism to hint at a certain mood or emotion, rather than just blatantly saying it. So, the use of symbolism is important because it helps create meaning and emotion in a story.
