Change in characters throughout a story is in inevitable to some degree, but how change is interpreted can alter the story to a greater extent. Cole Matthews develops into a young teenager who accepts his mistakes and is concerned for others wellbeing. Throughout Touching Spirit Bear Cole faces numerous challenges that brings along pain that can heal or destroy. The anger that leads to Coles transformation is a result of childhood trauma, with the help of Circle Justice Cole experiences a variety of opportunities that assist Cole in his path of healing. Coles change has influenced his personality and how he now sees himself, the way he looks at others, and how others look at him.
The constant mental and physical abuse that Cole receives from his parents fuels the flames for his increasing criminal activity. After Cole breaks into a hardware store, Peter Driscal informed the proper authorities, getting Cole caught. Cole later physically assaults Peter, which leaves him with permanent damage. “Serves him right” Cole responded when told of Peters condition, Cole believed that everything was Peter 's fault for not keeping his mouth shut and it wouldn 't have been a problem if he knew how to fight back. During the first drop off an the island Cole quickly wanted them to leave with no goodbyes Edwin and Garvey climbed aboard the boat, as they waved towards Cole as he waved back he extended his middle finger as the skiff drove off. On the second trip Garvey and Edwin spent a few days on the island to help Cole get prepared for the months ahead, on the last day everybody was in a happy, jolly mood, they laughed and joked around. This time the skiff left Cole only felt the fear of being alone.
