Brad Cohen has Tourette syndrome since he was six. Tourette syndrome is known as neurological disorder where people made strange noise, twitches and uncontrollable movements ("Tourette Syndrome Association of Australia is a registered charity to support families and individuals understand and manage Tourette Syndrome.", 2016). Since he was young, his father constantly felt annoyed by this tics and his involuntary movements. He did not really acknowledge Brad for who he was. His mother, on the other hand, was very supportive and she never gives up hope. His mother never stops looking for answer to find out what is wrong with her son. Brad’s mother used authoritative parenting style. She believes and listens to Brad that he cannot control his tics and twitches that he is making. She also encourages Brad to never give in to Tourette syndrome by encouraging him to stay strong and achieve his dream to teach.
Besides that, Brad has a strong intrinsic motivation to be a teacher because of his desire to be teaching students even if they may be different ("Intrinsic Motivation", 2016). Brad does not want any of the children to go through what he experiences before in the past. He wanted to become a teacher just like Mr Myers who accepted and understood his request of wanting to be treated the same as the others.
Self determination theory consist of organismic needs which are competences, related needs and autonomy ("selfdeterminationtheory.org – Theory", 2016).Competences are met when we feel that we are able to achieve something with our own hands. Brad believes that he can be a teacher if only he was given the chance. He was confident in his teaching skills and his resume was good. After what he have been through in life, he manage to secure a job as a teacher. Relatedness is when you are able to fit in and belong to a society. Even though , Brad is different, he was able to fit in into society just like a normal person. Autonomy is the sense that we are in control of our own life. Brad did not let his father and his Tourette syndrome stop
