Tics are unwanted movements, twitches or sounds. Tics can be classified as motor or vocal. Motor tics are associated with movements, while vocal tics are associated with sound. Tics can also be categorized as simple or complex. Tourette Syndrome is one type of Tic Disorder. Tics are basically random movements that the person with the illness can’t control. What causes this to happen is unknown. Tourettes syndrome affects about 200,000 Americans 1 in 100 Americans shows symptoms of this disorder. Tourettes syndrome is three or four times more likely to strike in men than women. Tourettes syndrome generally begins in childhood in children between 5-9 years old and may stay for a lifetime. Simple motor tics include but are not limited to neck stretching, jaw movements, head bobbing, shoulder shrugging, facial grimacing, eye blinking, and arm jerking. Complex motor tics involve multiple muscle groups or combinations of movements and tend to be slower and more purposeful in appearance. Vocal tics at associated with sound. Simple vocal tics include but are not limited to hooting, throat clearing, grunting, sniffing, and shouting. There is no blood test that is needed for a diagnosis for tourettes, but neuroimaging studies, MRI’s, EEG’s, and Computerized tomography(Or a TG).
