During the 18th century the slave trade prospered. Europeans manipulated Africans from the coast to attack nearby tribes and take captives (slaves). The slaves were exchanged for goods like guns and cloth. They were then shipped across the Atlantic in horrifying conditions. In spite of this the British forbidden the slave trade in 1807.
The detailed descriptions included in primary sources, along with the descriptive and emotional illustrations included in graphic history are crucial elements in studying and understanding the process and history of the transatlantic slave trade. Rafe Blaufarb and Liz Clarke tie both of these together to help readers truly understand this historic tragedy in the book, Inhuman Traffick: The International Struggle Against the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Although different than the standard book that may be used, that simply spews information out in an uncreative and somewhat boring way, this book is a tool that can be chosen in classrooms to teach different aspects of the slave trade. Working together, the primary sources and graphic history
This unprecedented global tragedy claimed millions of lives over four centuries, and left a terrible legacy that continues to dehumanize and subjugate people around the world to this day. The forced movement of West Africans across the Atlantic to the Caribbean happened on cutting-edge scale of brutality and inhumanity, killings and massive abuses. Compare the motives for Transatlantic export slavery and the modern system of human trafficking. Also, compare the impact on the lives of individuals who are victimized by each system. For hundreds of years, much of the world relied on slave labor to grow, build, and refine many essential materials. Commonly, slaves were captured in Africa and sent to the Caribbean, North America, or South America. There, slaves were forced into grueling manual labor and given little supplies to live on while being physically and verbally abused constantly by their white masters.
The Issue of Sources through This Brutal Time Over 12 million enslaved African women, men, and even children were compelled to migrate to the Americas from the early 16th to the late 19th centuries. Many of these slaves were bought and sold to European slave traders after the migration to the Americas. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade refers to the migration of slaves. The major problem is the problem of sourcing during that time period.
Devour their curdled blood, gobble up their molten flesh, and ravish their females’ ebony bodies; what else have masters to do when the slaves’ toil brings them all that they need and more. Bundled up under the decks, inhaling a loathsome stench, Equiano feels “so sick and low” that he becomes unable to eat and wishes for death, his last friend, but only to get tortured further (Equiano 65). This represents an average slave’s life when being transported from his native land to the colonizers’ country to work in fields, mills, and factories. Slave trade, the cruelest evil of colonization, has resulted in the deprivation of African people of their kith and kin, their freedom and dignity, and their right to a decent life. On the other hand, their
Human trafficking can be defined as “organized criminal activity in which human beings are treated as possessions to be controlled and exploited.” (Merriam-Webster) This crime is a common occurrence and more than 20 million people are estimated to be affected by trafficking according to The International Labour Organization. (Gale Student Resources in Context) And, in the U.S., “The U.S. State Department estimates that some 800,000 people, mostly women and children, are trafficked each across international borders to be exploited for sex and labor.”
Thesis Statement When people think of human trafficking, many people think of just sex trafficking, but human trafficking also includes labor trafficking, which means being forced to
It is when women and kids are taken and used for manual labor or commercial sex acts “trafficking or slavery is the exploitation of women and children,...includes…. prostitution and sex trafficking of women and girls,...and is characterized by the exploitation of a human being in exchange for goods or money.” (soroptimist). If you live in a big city or a high populated area you might be seeing trafficked victims everyday and not even know it, they have been silenced so they can’t tell anyone of their situation. When students from Manton High School were asked what they know about human trafficking and what it involved, 75% of the students that were asked said that human trafficking involved slavery either if it was sex slavery or labor

We never thought that over one-hundred years later there would be a new form of slavery that has affected so many people around the globe. Human trafficking is another name for modern-day slavery, where the victims involved are forced, coerced and deceived into labor and sexual exploitation. Most human trafficking victims are forced into the trade by the false promises made regarding job opportunities. Many women from third world countries are lured into this trade with the bait of false marriages or false jobs.
Human trafficking is one of the largest and most prevalent issues that affects all walks of life both domestically and internationally. Human trafficking is not only a horrendous crime but a major human rights violation, impacting public health. “Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery” . Human trafficking is the taking of a person with the intent to exploit them through, sexual exploitation, forced labor, slavery/servitude, or the removal of organs.
Therefore, this is clearly not an example of human trafficking. After analyzing each sources use of the three most important components of human trafficking, the better piece is clear. Forced labor, captivity, and poor working conditions were all used as criterion for human trafficking in Noy Thrupkaew’s piece. “Slavery in the Fields” failed to meet even one of these criterion. Human trafficking is a very rampant problem, and we should not reduce it with loose interpretations of what constitutes it.
