The Change in Federal policy

The United States government did change their federal policy towards Native American with the Trail of Tears . The Trail of Tears removed Indians from land given to them by the government .

In 1785 the U.S. Government entered into the Treaty at Hopewell with the Cherokee Nation. The treaty stated if any citizen tries to settle on any Indian land the U.S wouldn't protect there colonist anymore .This clearly gave the land to the Cherokee nation and recognize them as the owners of the land.

In 1832 the Cherokee nation to the state of Georgia to court in the case of Worcester v. Georgia 1832. In this case it was decided georgea could not regulate the cherokee or there land . The case shows a U.S. court stating the Cherokee Nation owned the land

Congress passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830. This Act forced the indians from their lands to designated areas west of the Mississippi River.
This is a definite change in Federal policy towards Native Americans. In the Treaty of Hopewell and Worcester v. Georgia the u.s government recognized the Cherokee ownership of land. But the Indian Removal Act of 1830 tells a different story by saying “That it may be lawful for the President of the United States to cause so much of any territory belonging to the United States, west of the river Mississippi, not included in any state of organized territory, and to which the Indian title has been extinguished”.
