Into the WIld Transcendental Connections Ralph Waldo EMrson founded the idea of transcendentalism which gained popularity from the eighteen-thirties though the eighteen-sixties. Into the Wild ,written by John Krakauer, is a biography about the infamous Chris McCandless who in April of 1992 hitchhiked to Alaska and traveled into the western wilderness in an attempt to construct a new life for himself. Unfortunately after one hundred and thirteen days Chris sadly passed away from eating unsafe food and later died inside of the bus they occupied. Also McCandless on multiple occasions refused tools, equipment, and advice which would’ve increased his chance of survival. Lastly McCandless before he set off for traveling he used the twenty-five thousand dollars that his parents gave for his college fund, donated to charity. These examples show that McCandledss doesn’t want help from others, only wants to give to those who really are in need and what he has provided to him from the forest. There are a variety of ways that McCandless made sure that he lived as simply as possible. Some of these ways are that he lived in a bus in the middle of nowhere in Alaska, away from any complication of the western world. Also he only brought ten pounds of rice, a book on edible plants, and 22.-caliber rifle, ammo for the gun, and a camera. Lastly because of McCandless' living simply he said “I don’t want to know what time it is. I don’t want to know what day it is or where I am”(Krakauer 7). This displays that McCandless only wanted to live by the bare minimum so his life in the wilderness is truly fulfilling instead of living off of unnecessary items.
