The students that make up our school districts come from varying backgrounds. Many of these upbringings do not include or adhere to a traditional Christian Christmas celebration. Therefore, there are two major beliefs in this case which are in direct conflict with each other. These views are people who believe Christmas is a Christian celebration and those who do not. The first side of the ethical issue in this case deals with individuals who identify with or accept Christian values.
Holidays celebrate an area’s culture and/or the day(s) it commemorates with various festivities and traditions. In Theodore Geisel’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the light-hearted denizens of Who-Ville are preparing to celebrate Christmas. Just as Ebenezer Scrooge’s personality changes throughout A Christmas Carol, so too does his viewpoint on the true meaning of Christmas. Scrooge goes through a pretty traumatizing experience when the spirits show him many new revelations, so he is very happy to find himself alive and well on Christmas day by saying, “I will live in the past, the present, and the future!...the spirits of all three shall strive within me” (109). What Scrooge means by this is that he will always remember what the spirits have taught him and that he will make sure to create a positive outcome based on these events. Believe it or not, religion, which is “the service and worship of God or the supernatural” (Webster) is far more common than the average Joe notices on the surface. A large amount of people wouldn’t see religious aspects in their everyday life except for those they practice and even then, most are limited to a single day if even that. With the proper lens it is possible to gaze deeper into everyday occurrences and see factors such as subliminal meanings and blatant themes that have religious values to accompanying them.
