Donald Trump tweeted in July that he is banning transgenders from the military. His tweet was “Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.” Transgender is part of the LGBT community. The LGBT community is the grouping of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, and Transgenders. Transgenders are people that changed from either a male to a female or the other way around. If a boy is born and as time goes on he does not feel he was born in the right body. The boy would most likely try to change his appearance to a girl because that is what he feels comfortable with. The Federal News Radio says, “military members undergoing transition surgery are nondeployable for up to 267 days” (Maucione, “What is the real cost of Trump’s transgender military ban?). Trump seems to be trying to inform and persuade his readers why it is such a good idea that transgender should be banned from the military. He gives transgenders the description of being unpredictable due to the surgery and waiting time. He conveys his audience by using more negative words than positive words to come across as why we transgender should not be allowed in the military. Calling someone unpredictable is an example. Being called unpredictable has more of a negative connotation than positive. The tone of this seems to be critical since the military is a serious business. According to a 2016 RAND Corporation study, the estimated cost is between $2.4 million and $8.4 million annually (Maucione, “What is the real cost of Trump’s transgender military ban?). That is a lot of money to only spend it on medical costs. But in 2016 President Barack Obama lifted the ban for transgender to be able to go into the military. Transgenders then turned to the military instead of suicide, drug or alcohol abuse (Washington Examiner “Trump right to reserve Obama’s transgender experiment on the military”). It is true that going through a transition is extremely expensive. But now in 2017, President Donald Trump does not want that to happen anymore because of the tremendous medical costs. Trump describing the transgender as a burden is very heartbreaking for a reader. This must be heartbreaking for a reader because no one should call someone a burden, especially regarding a group that faces high rates of bullying, homelessness, abuse, physical and sexual abuse.
