The Effect of Demeaning Stereotypes on the LGBT Community Establishing one’s identity within human culture and mankind is one of the most difficult aspects to accomplish as an individual. Due to evolution and individuality within society, there are many results from this difficult journey. Over time, many people have discovered that they have different sexualties or gender idnetificaions than society expects. This difference has formed the LGBTQ community. Within the United States, 1.4 million people identify as transgender, the most living in California, New Mexico, and Georgia. Due to transgender people identifying himself differently, controversies have developed. A bathroom bill– named for legislation that defines access to public facilities, especially restrooms, for transgender people– defines is an example of one of the many controversies (Kralik). The big controversy comes down to whether or not people should be allowed to use bathrooms they are most comfortable in, rather than where their birth-gender dictates.
But, not all of the states approve of the bathroom bills, forcing the transgender population within that area to use the bathroom that corresponds with the gender on their birth certificate. North Carolina passed a law that forces individuals to use bathrooms that correspond with their birth certificate. Transgender people can obtain modified birth certificates if they have received sex reassignment surgery (Steinmetz). But without it, North Carolina along with many other states, are stating that an individual needs to have undergone surgery to use these specific
