Travis Boyette was 44 years old at the time the story takes place. He was a convicted rapist and a murderer who spent many years in prison on multiple occasions before being released to a halfway house in Topeka, Kansas. Travis was set up for a life of crime and pain during his incredibly troubled childhood. He was raped repeatedly as a little boy by a man who he thought was his uncle. Later in life he discovered that the man he thought was his father was really someone's his mom had met after giving birth to him. After his uncle raped him, he got him hooked onto drugs. Boyette then led a life of petty crimes such as stealing and drug abuse before he was sent to a reformatory school. After being let out he became a serial criminal who often raped women. He claimed to be injured in some sort of brawl at the jail which causes difficulty moving so he requires the use of a cane to get around. He really just uses it as a weapon against thugs and such. Boyette stated that the health facilities within jails are less than adequate so he was never properly examined for the headaches he frequently experienced. After passing out, a doctor was said to have looked at him and diagnosed him with an incurable brain tumor that left him with little time to live, months at the most.
