Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson, is about a young boy that happens across a treasure map due to some peculiar circumstances. Before he stumbles across this, however, he had to deal with “the captain”. Billy Bones, also known as the captain, showed up one day to the Admiral Benbow. And that is when young Jim Hawkin’s journey began. Some refer to the meaning of this adventure as Jim’s journey to becoming a man. The big turning point in the beginning of Treasure Island, is when Billy Bones kills over after a series of troubling events. In this quote, Doctor Livesey is telling Billy Bones if he continues to drink he will die. This all happened shortly after Bill had been introduced to his old shipmate, Black Dog. Black Dog forced young Jim to accompany his inside the Admiral Benbow. Black Dog and Billy Bones were now clearly more enemies than friends. After some loud shouting and a clash of swords, Black Dog was chased out of the inn. Bill has sustained a hit from the shoulder and was bleeding heavily. He called for Jim to get his rum, and that is what led to the heart attack. “Even as he did so, he reeled, put his hand to his throat, stood swaying for a moment, and then, with a peculiar sound, fell from his whole height face foremost to the floor” (Stevenson 23). The captain had died of apoplexy, which is unconsciousness or incapacity resulting from a cerebral hemorrhage or stroke. The captain had a sea chest that nobody had looked inside the entirety of his stay at the Admiral Benbow. Inside of the chest was some very peculiar items, but the least of which was something wrapped in an oilskin packet. Luckily they were able to get away from the pirates by hiding. “...I helped her, tottering as she was, to the edge of the bank, where, sure enough , she gave a sigh and fell on my shoulder. ...but I managed to drag her down the bank and a little way under the arch” (Stevenson 28). Then after the calvary arrived to ward off the pirates, Jim Hawkins sets out with the calvary for Dr. Livesey. Once they had arrived at Dr. Livesey’s, they soon began to go through the oilskin packet. “The doctor opened the seals with great care, and there fell out the map of an island, with latitude and longitude, soundings, names of kills and bays and inlets. and every particular that would be needed to bring a ship to a safe anchorage upon its shores” (Stevenson 38).
