In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, women are mistreated and abused on a daily basis. It is pointed out multiple times that a man will always find a woman to blame. In the book Mariam and Laila's husband, Rasheed is very abusive to them, and always blames them for things that are not their fault. This eventually causes him to be killed by his wives, because they could not stand him anymore. One example in the book when a man blames a woman for something that is not her fault, was when Nana and Jalil had an affair, and Nana was cast out, because of this. Nana told Mariam ”Learn this now and learn it well, my daughter: Like a compass needle that points North, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman.” (Pg. 7). Nana should not have been the only one who was blamed for this, because, both her and Jalil had the affair. When they were caught, they tried to convince the police to let them go, but they didn't listen to them. That night an officer came to their house to tell Rasheed what happened, and Rasheed dragged them upstairs and beat them, and picked up Aziza by her hair. Rasheed and the police should not have blamed them for trying to leave, because Rasheed is very abusive, and it is his own fault that his wives hate him. Another example was when Rasheed found out that Laila had Tariq over and was talking to him. When Rasheed found out about this, he started beating Laila, and then when Mariam tried to stop him, Rasheed started to beat her too. Then Rasheed started to strangle Laila, so Mariam went outside and got a shovel, and hit Rasheed with it, and then again with the sharp part to kill him.
