“Anything you can put in your pantry,” Charland said cheerfully when I asked what type of donations BABH was looking for. Besides donating food, students can get involved with the many events lined up for this fall season. October 3 begins the Big Kick Off Event at the Ferg from 11-3 (Division of Student Affairs Beat Auburn Beat Hunger). Students are encouraged to come out and learn more about the organization. Free snacks and beverages will be provided.
Melvin Amore, Zulu Social Aid, and Pleasure Club assistant financial secretary, donated time and money to schools and charities throughout its 99-year history (Maloney 1). Orpheus organization focuses on improving education and Zulu debutantes get college scholarships while members volunteer and serve as role models within the community. “Muses Community Involvement Committee, said her krewe donates a free ride to an honorary Muse and $5,000 to her charity of choice each year” (Maloney 1). Krewes are doing good in the community and actually care about Mardi Gras and the happiness it brings to everyone. This is a credible and reliable source because the passage came from a recommended database.
The men’s lacrosse team participated in the annual IronPigs Suites-N-Treats event on Thursday, October 26 to represent the Cops ‘N’ Kids organization. This event provides an opportunity for children from throughout the Lehigh Valley who are of special needs or underprivileged to have a unique Halloween experience. This is the third year that the men’s lacrosse team has participated and were able to create a memorable night for over 800 children. “We are who we are because of the support we receive from the community, and I am pleased to say that DeSales students and staff have demonstrated their appreciation for who we are and what we hope to accomplish in our mission of ‘connecting kids and community through literacy’”, says Beverly Bradley,
My mother has worked for Children’s Mercy for nine years, and it has been a huge blessing to hear about all of the wonderful things that Children’s Mercy does for our community. As a result of Children’s Mercy being a not for profit hospital, their funding must come from sources outside of their patients. One of the biggest fundraisers that Children’s Mercy conducts is called The Big
The systems we have put in place to ensure individuals and families do not fall into destitution often fail to do the job; with people struggling without the necessities of life for too long (HungerCount, 2014). Therefore, the Salvations Army food banks can be seen as a Social Economy institution for many reasons. J.J. McMurtry argues that the Social Economy is based on the community and the individual. He says "people participate in the social economy-not to be non-profit or non-state per se, but to actually make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of other, to build community of one sort or another" (J.J. McMurtry, Pg 30). Salvation Army food banks are predominantly made to focus its attention on communities.
Susan Goodman Komen was born in the state of Illinois during the year of 1943. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977 at the age of 33. Susan later died at the age of 36 in 1980. Nancy Goodman Brinker, Susan’s younger sister, was in the mindset that not only her sister but all patients would have a better chance of survival if medical staff and treatment recipients had more information on breast cancer and care options. Before Susan’s death Nancy promised her she would find a cure and to fulfill her promise Nancy founded the Susan G. Komen Foundation in 1982 in Susan’s honor.
Halloween On October 31 every year we celebrate a holiday known as Halloween. Celebrating consists of traditional activities such as: trick-or-treating, haunted houses, dressing up as your favorite character, carving jack-o-lanterns. There’s tons of fun stuff to do on Halloween, but there’s tons of history behind it as well. For starters, did you know that in Ohio, Massachusetts, and Iowa Trick-or-treating is referred to as Beggars Night?
The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is a charity that is established both locally and inter-nationally. The first Ronald McDonald House Charities location was open on October 15, 1974 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The first Ronald McDonald House Charities location that was open globally was in 1985, it is located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The original concept for the Ronald M. House Charites were to make it a “home away from home” for people. The Ronald M. House Charities are funded by donations, special community events, and the special boxes located in the Ronald McDonald restaurants.
The staff of St. Albans Sanatorium is ingenious when it comes to fundraising for their cause. “We hold any number of events to raise money for St. Albans,” said Marcelle Hanauer, director of operations for the sanatorium. Over the years that has meant a dedicated cadre of volunteers was needed to man activities as diverse as zombie walks, history tours, and the wildly successful haunted house. “These events raise funds for renovations to St. Albans,” said Marcelle Hanauer, director of operations.
The Bengal Tiger’s Benevolent Charity No birds, no insects, no squirrels; no beast to see except one adult Bengal tiger only a couple feet in front of point blank range. A sight horrid enough to shut down the throbbing of the heart, but also a sight benevolent enough to reassure one man in God. In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, an adolescent named Piscine Patel, also known as Pi Patel, gets stranded on a lifeboat with no company except that of a Bengal tiger in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This tiger does not only end up becoming one of Pi’s biggest obstacles of survival, but also his inspiring companion and friend.
One of the most-awaited moments of the year is right here once again. Dim neighborhoods are brightened by ghastly smiles of Jack-o '-lanterns in communities where the breeze is also slowly getting colder and the leaves that have fallen off of pines give each step a crunch. In a few days, children dressed like pirates, princesses, ghouls, and little monsters will be knocking on doors requesting goodies and several other goodies. Yet just before Halloween begins, you can delight the kids in your community by teaming up with several moms and dads and arranging a Halloween scavenger quest.
I will give the money we make to the Make A Wish Foundation. Make A Wish gives kids with life threatening diseases one wish so they can go somewhere, have something, or do something they would love. The Make A Wish Foundation has granted over 180,000 wishes nationwide. Make A Wish Iowa grants a wish every other day. Any child between the ages 2 ½ - 18 that has a life threatening disease can register for a wish.
Not only do these clubs recognize academic excellence, they also provide many opportunities for community service. Blood drives, food drives and Operation Christmas Child are only a few of the projects that we participate in throughout the year. I am
In October 2012, One Direction taped a wakeup call encouraging their fans to get the education they need to reach their dreams through Get Schooled’s Fall Attendance Challenge (Gets Behind School Attendance Challenge, 2012). In 2013, One Direction started working with Comic Relief with a vision to free the world from poverty. One Direction’s Red Nose Day single “One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)” topped the charts in 63 countries in its first week of release and raised over £850k for Red Nose Day through single sales. The boy band made a visit to Africa in January 2013 where they met sick young children suffering from many different life threatening diseases. £1 million were donated to Red Nose Day as a result of the films from their trip.
Passion for UNICEF’s mission I was once asked what philanthropy meant to me. For me, it means to acknowledge the exisiting inequalities, to be empathetic, and to give back to the society with my abilities. I am passionate about UNICEF’s mission as I believe that every child deserves safety, healthcare, education, and a fair chance to reach their full potential; and these could only happen when the protection of children's rights is universal.
