“Trifles” is a play written by Susan Glaspell. The play has a consolidated and mysterious plot. A man has been murdered by his wife. The plot centers on John Wright’s murder and Mrs. Wright is the prime suspect. The men of the town, who are considered to be intelligent and quick witted, are unable to solve the murder mystery by using logic and law whereas the women, work out this puzzle with the help of domestic indicators. The dignity and position of women in the society is subordinate to men. They are considered to be less important, which can be easily related with the title of the play. It is ironic how trifles, the unimportant and less valued things, help in figuring out a murder mystery. The title “trifles” is itself full of irony. Here “trifles” can be related with two things, firstly the women and secondly the domestic things. “Well, women are used to worrying about trifles” this was remarked by Mr. Hale, little did he know that these “trifles” had the ability to resolve the murder mystery. Not only Mr. Hale but the Sheriff also says “Nothing here but kitchen things” in the starting of the play. They understand Mrs. Wright was living a miserable life. This shows that the men’s mind is stuffed with injustice and preconception so much so that they neglect the relevant evidences as being “trifles”. They investigate the other male dominant places in the house. They turn a blind eye towards kitchen, the only place which is under the control of a woman.
