According to Bear Grylls, “Being brave isn’t the absence of fear. Being brave is having that fear but finding a way through it.” Many situations that happen in our everyday lives focus on triumph over adversity. This quote explains that when one triumphs over adversity, the adversity isn’t absent from his life, but he must triumph over it and find a way through the situation that is affecting him. Historical events have followed this theme of triumph over adversity, including the infamous Holocaust. The play, The Diary of Anne Frank, by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett conveys the story about how the Frank family, the Van Daan family, and Dussel live together in a Secret Annex during the Holocaust. When the Nuremberg Laws were passed, the Jews were isolated and forced to wear yellow Jewish stars. They were sewn on all their clothing to distinguish between Jews and non-Jews. To relate to the play, throughout The Diary of Anne Frank, there are references to how the Nuremberg Laws affect the everyday lives of everyone in the annex, proven by the reference of yellow Stars of David. After the Nuremberg Laws are passed, the stage directions show the actions of Peter defying them: “[He starts to rip off his Star of David.]” (1.2.96). Anne’s reaction shows that her attitude shifts as a result of Peter’s actions: “But you can’t do that. They’ll arrest you if you go out without your star.” (1.2.99). The actions of Peter and the reaction of them from Anne show that the Nuremberg Laws were affecting the annex dwellers directly. To summarize, the laws force Jews to wear a yellow Star of David, and when Peter rips off his star, Anne is surprised and reacts by saying that he is breaking the law and can be arrested. All in all, the Nuremberg Laws affect the overall mood of all the annex dwellers since they are forced into isolation and forced to wear Stars of
