Trolls don’t live underground and cause earthquakes, do they? The answer is no. Today, I write this letter to explain a big idea that I believe you have had a misconception of. Many natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes are all tied to a theory known as the plate tectonics. In the early 1900s, a famous German scientist known as Alfred Wegner came up with a theory known as The Continental Drift. This theory stated that there was once a single landmass known as Pangea. Wegner said that these continents drifted away and formed what is now present on the world map. In following years, Scientists who agreed with Wegner tweaked his theory and came up with a more accurate one called Plate Tectonics. The theory of plate tectonics said that the Lithosphere, the layer of the earth we live on, is broken up into many portions. These portions are called Tectonic Plates. The certain points where these …show more content…

Wegner once said that if we carefully examine the map carefully, we can notice that many continents can fit together like puzzles. This observation not being considered evidence, he gave two supporting details. One said that similar fossils of organisms that cannot swim were found on two distant continents. This must mean that once, these continents were once together and were a combined landmass because there is no other scientific reason for this to be true. Another piece of evidence came later on, where scientists defined a divergent boundary. At these boundaries, magma rises from a crack in the Lithosphere, pushing present land in the opposite direction. When the magma reaches the ocean floor, the magma cools off and forms new land. As this occurs over a long period of time, it moves away from some distance from its original plot, which explains the displacement of
