In chapter 52, Troy is hanging out in a nearby tavern—White Hart tavern. It seems that he is having fun. He is acting like a free man; however, Troy also seems worried about the legal repercussions that he may have to face for pretending that he is dead. Troy also wants to know if Bathsheba is considering in marrying Boldwood. The people of Weatherbury suspect that Sergeant Troy is alive—this suspicion travel throughout the town—pure gossiping. Nonetheless, Boldwood then shoots Troy in the chest. Troy is now dead; therefore, he is finally at peace with the love of his life—Fanny Robin. Bathsheba blames herself for Troy’s death.
