During the reading of chapter 1 by Brenda Combs I became tearful with her story of how the circumstances in her life changed by imploring help from the Lord to heal her from her addictions and homelessness. After she took her decision of staying positive, and setting up goals, and with determination that she and her son deserved more than a simple paycheck. Those thoughts were her inspiration for improvement, and working very hard in her dreams without giving up. Understanding one’s needs requires that a teacher take the steps to understanding the child’s personality traits, interests, abilities, disabilities, and so forth. Students are more likely to grasp the interest of learning a specific subject if they feel that the teacher is kind and understanding, just as Trisha and Brittany’s teachers is. Brittany’s mother mentions that a significant change is notable in Brittany’s self-esteem and grades (Kirk, Gallagher, & Coleman, 2015). Trisha certainly associates her good grades to her relationship with her science teacher and identifies her teacher as helpful (Kirk, Gallagher, & Coleman, 2015).

Ever since I was young, I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher. When I would stay the night with my aunt’s or at my grandmother’s house for the summer, I would always create math worksheets and roll calls for my cousins to fill out because they were my students. When I was in middle and high school, I began helping with the children’s church, always finding an interest in teaching new material to children and watching as their faces glowed when they finally understood something that was new to them. As a future teacher, I will always have good intentions for my students. I will recognize their abilities and encourage growth while having a positive approach. I will teach in a variety of ways that is beneficial to my students. If they are having difficulties learning the material, I will change my teaching strategies until progress is achieved. I will include every student; the quiet will be heard, the misunderstood will be redirected and the gifted will be rewarded.
While reading Mary Church Terrell’s “In Union There is Strength,” the first time through, I noticed the paragraphs were divided into multiple sections, like almost designated sections. There was an African American children section, African American youth section, and African American female section. None of these paragraphs really bled together or dipped into another group. I did pick up one group of people were missing a paragraph: males. I do not think was an accident on Terrell’s doing, she did this on purpose.
I have taken away many useful strategies and information from the College 101 class I took this summer. This course has given me enough information to help me feel confident that I will be successful in the rest of my highschool experience and my future college experience. This course has given me skills that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Learning to study properly, avoid procrastination, and take notes correctly has been something that has already helped me tremendously. It has helped me feel less stressed on a day-to-day basis as well as improving my school work quality.
Reflecting on my educational and practical experiences, I appreciate the infinite influence that teachers have on children. I realise that children will take the skills and knowledge learnt in the classroom and use it throughout their lives. I know a teacher has to deal with many daily pressures and challenges, in the classroom. However, I feel I require the skills needed to deal with these challenges. As a teacher I hope not only to be an educator but a positive role model, whom the children can look up to and trust.
Though there have been many philosophies of education over the years, there are two that encompass my belief system most, traditional and progressive. Most educators do not believe both philosophies can exist at the same time; however, during my study it became apparent that the two philosophies do not have to be mutually exclusive. Taking this class has had a profound impact on me. I have learned how to properly study for a college class. Also, I learned how to effectively communicate and reach out to my professor. This was my first college course which gave me a learning experience about psychology and myself as a student.
