In the start of the January chapter, Holling has just been on the front of their local paper for playing a part as Ariel in the Holiday Extravaganza. Doug Swieteck’s brother just so happened to see the paper, so he takes the entire stack of newspapers to his house then later puts then around the school. Holling is mortified by this act and starts to tear down the photograph. One of Hollings friends finds some of the pictures in the girl’s bathroom as well. The friend who found the pictures too helps take them down.

In the book Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the author describes the setting by sharing a flashback of the protagonists home town. Nina, the protagonist, finds joy in her hometown because of “how ants found their way to [the] kitchen counters, pelicans sh*t on the ledge of the deck” (Reid 14). Another factor that makes her hometown significant is the way a “tiny spark in the dry desert wood can grow to a blaze and run wild, burning bright orange and red” (Reid 4). Other things I would expect to see there are many animals such as birds roaming around on the sand of beautiful beaches. I would expect the weather to be amazing most times but sometimes be as gloomy as a worn-out kid in the backseat of a long car ride.
Jana Hensel was thirteen when the Berlin wall fell, and in her memoir, After the Wall, she laments her youth and the sudden disappearance of the German Democratic-Republic that occurred almost overnight, especially in her memories. While Hensel finds nothing wrong with her now Western life, this memoir is dedicated towards people like her, who even now are straddling the line between the East German past and the West German future, and she discusses her loss of identity through her nostalgia, her transitions, and her parents. In the first chapter, Hensel mentions a moment when she was hanging out with her friends. The second half of The Strength in What Remains, constitutes a returning of what has previously been mentioned in the book. The author, Tracy Kidder, uses material from his own experience to add to what has previously been mentioned in the beginning of the book. The second part of the story feels more personal; it is filled with unguarded moments that exemplify Deo’s strength, but also his trauma. Chapter thirteen consists of numerous statistics and facts (Kidder, 189-204). I liked the way Kidder placed these important facts intermittently to avoid making the story read like a history textbook.
Imagine being a 17 year old African American kid always being judged just because of his skin color. Everywhere you go you feel like all eyes are on you, especially when you go to a school that only has eight black kids. That's exactly how Justyce McAllister felt in Dear Martin by Nic Stone. In the book, the main character Justyce goes through a lot of conflict involving his skin color. Even though he has a full scholarship at Braselton Preparatory Academy, and is a very smart student, he still gets judged.
Culture difference doesn’t always come easy. America is taught that we are superior and our media only covers what won’t affect our nation. The author of the article “Different is Just Different” is Suzanne Fisher Staples and her main idea is how important it is for people to understand the differences of another nation and culture. Different does not mean better or worse but helps us become more compassionate, media only covers what is convenient for the nation and women in Pakistan and Afghanistan are affected by poverty the most due to no education and no income. Being different gives us an opportunity to create a compassionate world and a better understanding of other nations and culture.
In Amanda Gorman's poem "The Hill We Climb", she employs several literary techniques to convey her message of hope and unity. These include but are not limited to anaphora, enjambment, and allusion. Anaphora is used to emphasize the importance of certain points in her poem. For example, in the lines “We will not march back to what was, but move to what shall be”, Gorman uses the repetition of the phrase “we will not” to emphasize her point.
The one that impacted me most was chapter 7 titled, “A Time to Stand”, Guiness challenges the reader to look at the lack of recognition the world has around it and challenges the reader to see that our calling is not only personal but it is also should push us to have a cultural outlook and reach out to change the world around us for Christ. My favorite quote from that chapter was from Page 59 which was , “ If so many of us profess to live by the gospel yet are so pathetically marginal to the life of our societies and so nondescript and inconsequential in our individual lives, is there something wrong with gospel, or does the problem lie with us?” This made me evaluate if I was living what I was preaching (literally), and gave me insight on how to live my Christian out
By volunteering at my local church and helping with local service projects, I have realized the commitment and perseverance it takes to lead by example. At my local church I continue to help with the organization of my youth group. After speaking at church staff meetings for several months we made it our goal to improve the youth group by ensuring that children and teens of all ages were included and had an opportunity to participate. I was able to create a system where teens who attended high school were paired with a middle school individual of the church. This provided a sense of inclusiveness and made the youth group more enjoyable for everyone.
Some of the most prominent themes that are found in revelations chapters twelve through sixteen are God’s triumph, christian suffering, and Satan’s deception. In various areas of the chapters God triumphs over Satan who is depicted as the red dragon. In chapter twelve there is a war in heaven between Michal and his army and Satan and his followers. Clearly stated in verse eight, “But he [the dragon] was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.” Chapter twelve is not the only section that God thwarts Satan's plans.
It makes them face harsh realities such as their own sin and shortcomings and ultimately realize that it's about Jesus. Their ministry, their work, their plans, their goals, and everything else points to one person, Jesus Christ. It’s a Christ centered ministry book. Genesis chapter 9 opens with the blessings of God on Noah and his children (Gen. 9:1). The devastation of the flood has passed. Now God establishes a covenant with the remaining inhabits and instructs them to go into the world and replenish it (Gen. 9:1-17). Here in these early days of reestablishing the nations of the earth an interesting interaction takes place. Noah had planted a vineyard and made wine (Gen. 9:20-21).
So I decided to do a collage on the book the CATCHER in the rye because it's shows you the most important parts and the less important parts at the same time and it's really easy to understand the concept. I included eight things that I think everyone should know about the book like how Holden travels places, what he does on his free time, and things he does with his friends. In her book “ A perfect Mess”, she shines light on how the bible connects to modern life. She goes about telling her experiences that exemplify how in “not so great” moments, God sees his child in need of his perfect love. In the article “ How Should I Live Life as a Christian Teen?” written by Catiana Nak Kheiyn, she discusses how even though we face hardships, God is on our side guiding us through it all. The article and the book both mention how we can get caught up in the false perceptions of Christianity. As a Christian, a man made list of do’s and dont’s does not exist.
