After the World War II, The US and Soviet Union emerged as the two superpowers that would influence the world. The US, a democratic nation, and Soviet Union, a communist nation, were exact opposites. As a result of their disagreements, and misunderstanding after WWII, the two nations engaged in what known as the Cold War. They saw each other as a threat to their ideologies. They wanted to influence the economic, politics and military power in the world. The two superpowers vied to control the postwar Europe, and clashed over the spread of communism in Asia. Many people in the United States believed that it was their country's duty to save the world from communism. The United States feared Communism expansion to other countries, and wanted to prevent Communists from taking over the world. George Kennan proposed a policy of containment: “Kennan argued that firm American resistance would eventually compel Moscow to adopt more peaceful policies” (Revel).The United States developed the Containment policy to prevent the spread of communism to other countries. The speech by President Truman known as the Truman Policy marked the beginning of the US’s fight against Communism: “"It must be the policy of United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures" (Truman Doctrine document). …show more content…

Great Britain had been supporting the Greece government, however, they could no longer offer to help them.
